This is a big issue in the health community and rest of the world these days, many health experts have different opinions on the matter and so do I and I will share it at the end of this blog post. There have been some studies conducted have compared organic eggs, milk, meats, and produce to non-organic (conventionally) grown foods. Those studies measured nutrients in the foods as well as contaminants like pesticides and bacteria. The studies aimed to find health differences between people who ate only organic or only non-organic (conventionally) grown foods.
After completing the studies and examining all the evidence, the researchers determined that organic foods don’t appear to have more vitamins or nutrients than non-organic foods. Non-organic fruits and vegetables were 30% more likely to have pesticides than organic fruits and vegetables. But because it’s rare for any produce to exceed pesticide safety limits set by the FDA, researchers say it’s not really likely to make much difference.
At the end of the day, researchers say there’s no evidence that people who eat an organic diet are healthier than those people who eat a non-organic diet, Guess what? Not everyone agrees.
Nutrition experts have praised the research studies since it helps to educate people on the myths that might make people afraid to eat fresh non- organic foods. “When we’re talking about organic, it’s really the process, not the product. The process of organic farming is different than conventional farming, but that doesn’t mean that the food is bad or unsafe,” says Melissa Joy Dobbins, RD, MS, a spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “I don’t want that mom who’s at the grocery store to feel guilty if she can’t afford organic. That mom shouldn’t feel like she’s making a lesser choice,” Dobbins says.
There has also been other studies done that found that organic fruits and vegetables contain about 12% more disease-fighting nutrients than non-organic foods. Not much of a difference in my opinion. I believe if it looks good eat it, before eating wash it. I choose organic and non-organic foods and herbs everyday and fresh local produce.
Organic foods are marketed to be pesticide-free but that’s not the case all the time unless you grow your own in your backyard. You also have to consider the term organic is just the process not the product so much. Many farmers grow organically and are non gmo but they just don’t have the money to pay for the certified label. When it comes down to it there is not much of a radical price difference or nutritional difference. Whether you choose organic or non-organic foods, as soon as the fruit or vegetable is picked it begins to lose it’s nutrients. and because of depleted soils and the time it takes organic or non-organic foods to reach the stores and your kitchen it is so important to use supplements.
